On
the cover, the band is decked out in Western gear in front of a
homestead evoking images of the American West in the 1800s that goes
along with the band’s name, the Motherlode. As for the music, it’s a mix
of rock, soul and psychedelia. The title track, When I Die, has a
really catchy chorus and melody like a soul vocal group by organist WM
‘Smitty’ Smith, guitarist Ken Marco and sax player Steve Kennedy. You
Ain’t Lookin In The Right Place Baby has a nice and short beginning that
sounds like a Black Moon loop, but was chopped by the Sound Providers,
before turning into a Soul-Rock number. Hard Life has two really short
drum breaks that were recorded very low in the mix. Soft Shell on the
other hand, starts off with a nice and loud drum break before the bass
comes in and just adds to the funkiness. Then however, the song turns
towards a mellow instrumental led by Marco’s sax playing.
