Studio project The Archies. It can be called a group of artists who worked in the late sixties and record the unforgettable song Sugar Sugar, became a hit in 1969. Essentially, no group The Archies and there was - there were only a few studio musicians gathered under the banner of the project, conceived by entrepreneur Don Kirshner (Don Kirshner), established in 1966 is another very controversial project, called group The Monkees. As planned by Kirchner, songs by The Archies performed on the TV cartoon character. That's why people real musicians, no one knew. The very name of The Archies comes from the television animated series The Archies Show.
In late 1967 Don Kirshner was appointed music supervisor on CBS and began work on a new morning cartoon show The Archies Show. The main objective of this musical show was the performance of a new song every Saturday morning. Kirchner immediately brought on producer Jeff Barry (who has worked with the Shangri-Las, Neil Diamond and The Monkees) and songwriter Ellie Greenwich, known for work with various women's vocal ensembles. Immediately after that Kirchner began to search the singer for the project. Barry offered him a candidacy Dante Rod (Rod Dante), whom he met in the studio during the recording musician Neil Diamond. Dante Kirchner liked. In addition, she was invited singer named Gina Thomas. The show started in 1968. The first song called Bang Shang-a-Lang in late 1968 landed in the top ten American hit parade.
In early 1969, Barry was invited to cooperate songwriter Andy Kim, a duet which composed the song Sugar Sugar. At the same time the place of Thomas took the singer Tony Wynn. The song Sugar Sugar, released as a separate single, quickly broke the charts and led him to four weeks. Only in the United States has sold over three million copies of the single; Billboard magazine named the song the best song of the year. Sugar Sugar has become a true classic style bubblegum-rock. Soon, the band released another single, the title track of which was Jingle Jangle. He got into the top ten. Last project success The Archies came in the spring of 1970, when it was released Who's Your Baby ?, has appeared in the top 40. At the end of 1970, Jeff Barry refused further cooperation with the show and moved on to other projects. With his departure, the history of The Archies ended.
