- The kernel of the Birmingham QUARTZ formed in the late 60s, when bassist Derek Arnold, guitarist Mick Hopkins and drummer Malcolm Cope met in the group Copperfield. In 1973, the trio was joined by vocalist Mick Taylor - and so a new group Bandylegs. In 1976, the group signed a contract with Jet Records. The team toured a lot and after a tour with Black Sabbath in 1977 changed the name to QUARTZ. In 1977, with the same name released their first album, which was produced by Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath). QUARTZ toured with Black Sabbath in support of this album. Queen guitarist Brian May playing guitar in the composition «Circles» backing vocals on who performs Ozzy Osbourne. The composition did not come out on the album and is present on the second side of the single «Stoking the Fires of Hell». The team played 3 times at festivals Reading and Leeds (1976, 1977 and 1980) and to support groups such as Iron Maiden, Saxon, UFO and Rush. A second studio album, Stand Up and Fight was released in 1980, the third - Against All Odds in 1983. In 1979, Jeff Nichols left the band and joined Black Sabbath. In 2004 came a collection of Satan's Serenade, a compilation which includes the debut studio album and a lot of unrealized and live tracks.
