John "Speedy" Keen, comrade Pete Townshend at art college, who had to work with his other stellar driver, John Meyalla - road manager, and play a little-known group of Tomcats, tried his hand at writing songs. In 1967, he wrote for The Who song Armenia City In The Sky, which entered the album The Who Sell Out.In January 1969, Pete Townshend, John Keane persuaded create your own group. The composition of this trio was highly unusual: in addition to Keane, who played the drums and sang, it included fifteen guitarist Jimmy McCulloch and elderly pianist Andy Newman, who worked as an engineer at the post office. In fact, Newman with his unusual style of play jazz, is admired by Townshend and Keane when he was in their students, and has become a central musical force Thunderclap Newman.Having signed a deal with The Who "Track", Thunderclap Newman released the single Something In The Air, which has become for many a farewell bow irrevocably passing epoch. Through a bizarre instrumental passages Newman and dreamy nostalgic vocals Keane single instantly became a number one hit, surpassing the popularity of commercial operation The Who.single success spawned invitations for TV and regular tours, but a kind of external image of the band did not play into their hands; in addition, to reproduce the magic of Something In The Air on stage, they had to invite other musicians - bassist Jim Avary and his younger brother Jimmy Jack on drums, to enable Keane to act as a frontman.Unfortunately, none of the subsequent singles group did not repeat the success of Something In The Air; as well as the only album Thunderclap Newman - Hollywood Dream, produced by Townshend (by the way, he played bass under the pseudonym Bijou Drains on this disc). In mid-1970 the band broke up. Newman and Keane continued to work in the studio and released solo albums and became popular Jimmy McCulloch and guitarist in his short life managed to play with several groups, in particular, Stone The Crows and Wings
