In October 1965 The Vikings bassist and guitarist Ace Kefford The
Mayfair Set Trevor Burton met behind the scenes of the famous Birmingham
club Cedar c London band vocalist Davy Jones & The Lower Third,
after having taken the pseudonym David Bowie. It is unclear how he saw
the musicians in a strong joint potential - both were very happy with
their groups and were not going to go anywhere - he convinced them that
they just need to create a new team. This project has shown interest
guitarist Mike Sheridan and The Nightriders Roy Wood, and when it
learned to visit members of Vikings, the lead singer and drummer Carl
Wayne scourged Bevan offered to fill vacancies. Thus was formed the
group The Move in its classic lineup.
Easily recognizable vocals
Ace can be heard on the first album and The Move in their singles. Has a
bright appearance and a reputation fashion hooligan, from which all you
can expect, bassist not schadivshy on stage their equipment, it has
long remained one of the most popular figures in the group for the fans
and the press, and often acted as a speaker, commenting on newspaper
latest releases.
«Move influenced me - we can assume that it was
the Move, we can assume that this was my way of life, drugs and all
that, but in the course of therapy, I figured out the exact moment in
history Move, when I went to the roof. At that time, when I and another
person - we will not name names - bought a vial of LSD, we went to my
apartment and drank it. Of course, we did not know exactly how much we
took - it was in a bubble. In short, I went too far, without knowing it,
and in the end we were in the club Cedar. We arrived in a taxi, because
the drive could not, and got on natural Masquerade! I already could not
think, and then I started to approach people wearing pirates, and I no
longer understand what is happening. And, apparently, because in my
childhood had a small problem with the psyche, overdosing acid finally
demolished my roof ... "
And during the British tour Move, held
in conjunction with the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Pink Floyd, Kefford
first began to show symptoms of depression, which as a result forced him
to leave the band, and marred his life for over 30 years.
"People
did not understand this. If I started a panic attack in a tour with
Hendrix - and in those days Eto'o called "panic attack" - no one
understood me. If it happens to me a panic attack on the road or in the
transmission of Top Of The Pops, and I was getting out of there
immediately, I did not understand. Nothing more - but I spent all my
life in asylums for the insane, rehabilitation centers and other
institutions to come back here. "
Back in 1968, a well-known
non-standard strokes Move manager Tony Sekanda offered Keffordu
immediately pursue a solo career. And in May, Ace went into the studio
with producer Trident Tony Visconti to record his own album. When the
session came to an end, Kefford broke again and closed the project. Long
considered lost while recording, but in 2003 it was restored six films,
which have been published on the album Ace The Face - in the form in which they left the studio without once planned arrangements and backing vocals.
When
the session to the album broke in life Kefforda came bleak strip where
there were drug abuse and suicide attempts, and treatment in homes for
the insane, divorce and separation from their children. However, he
occasionally has made persistent attempts to get back to music.
"I
got into this old Victorian hospital, where, as in a prison, every
locked iron gate. I organized sessions of electroconvulsive therapy -
treatment of electric shock - six times. I went out and I was approached
by Dennis Ball with Cozy Powell - still quite a boy, but he played both
John Bonham; Thus began the story of Ace Kefford Stand ».
Ace
Kefford Stand - a group with the participation of Danny Ball, Dave Ball
and Cozy Powell, formed in the autumn of 1968 - has released two singles
on the label Atlantic: For your love / Gravy booby jamm in April 1969
and This World's an Apple in December 1969, after leaving Kefforda under
the name of Big Bertha. They can be heard on the same CD Ace The Face, as well as unreleased material before the session.
Incidentally,
the collection includes classic and psychedelic thing, written at the
time Ace to Move, but later passed over to another team, Birmingham, The
Lemon Tree: William Chalker's Time Machine, Trevor Burton-produced and
Andy Lowe Feyrueter of Amen Corner.
