The core of the group was formed around brothers tavern (Derek [b. February 11, 1947], Ray [b. December 8, 1949] and Phil [b. August 27, 1937] Shulman). The brothers grew up in a musical environment. Their father, a former professional jazz musician, strongly encouraged their craving for music, and playing musical instruments they have learned even before reading and writing. For seven years, Ray has mastered the piano and violin, Phil at this age already quite passable played the saxophone, and Derek did not depart from his brethren. So there is nothing surprising in the fact that they are drawn to perform such a sophisticated and non-trivial music, and that, being among the most innovative and original artists of his time, they served their purpose "perfectly." But work in the "progressive" manner, they began not at once.
In the mid-sixties, Ray and Derek decided to engage seriously in music, gathered a group THE HOWLIN 'WOLVES and began to perform rhythm and blues, focusing mostly on American artists, and, of course, in the super-trendy while THE BEATLES. At the time, Ray was 13 and Derek 16 years, but of the seriousness of their intentions no doubt arise. Was invited as a saxophonist and producer of his older brother Phil, who at that time worked as a teacher of music, they started rehearsals and rather quickly prepared the material, consisting mainly of fashion hits of those years. In addition to the brothers Shalmen The group included drummer Tony Rensli (Tony Ransley) and bassist Pete O 'Fleerti (Pete O'Flaherty). Fun fact: in the group for a short time he played a young unknown pianist, who would later become famous under the name of Elton John.
Gradually the group began performing in small venues, and soon she had a "real" producer John Rivers (John Rivers), which at the insistence of the band changed its name to SIMON DUPREE & THE BIG SOUND, and the role of "Simon Dupree" got vocalist Derek. Remembers Ray Shalmen: "I was only 16, I played the guitar. One manager told us that we have to change his name to SIMON DUPREE & THE BIG SOUND. Until now, I can not understand why, but that was the scene of those years. You We should have the name of a luxury. "
Under the leadership of Rivers group is very actively promoted and gaining momentum, but soon Rivers was fired and was replaced manager BBC BBC John King (John King). It was King became the first producer of this group. He was able to get the leadership of EMI consent to release of the single "I See The Light", which reached 45 in the UK charts, and shot her to place a warming composition tour BEACH BOYS. He also has a role in the success of the single "Kites" (tenth place in the UK charts), through which the group has greatly increased in popularity and became a frequent guest on radio. During the recording of the first single, musicians "talked" with mellotron, which in 1967 still seemed quite outlandish and untapped tool. The band's popularity continued to grow, and the guys have earned three hundred pounds for his statement, but, nevertheless, the crisis has been brewing. Management demanded that the group of "new achievements", trying to repeat the success of "Kites", and even to the same Derek became terribly annoying role of "Simon Dupree" from which tried to sculpt a kind of sex symbol for schoolgirls. And the biggest problem was that the musicians just felt cramped in the pop format, and their desire to perform more complex and experimental music went contrary to the needs of the public for which they relied.
Remembers Ray Shalmen: "We're not trying to be weird. We just do pop music and we really started writing their own material. The music that we really loved, was in the spirit of Don Covay, Otis Redding and Sam 'n' Dave. But we are headed towards fashion pop band, wearing fashionable clothes. After we released a successful single, we demanded to make another one. And we did not. " As a result, they disbanded the group, and from that very moment began the story itself GENTLE GIANT.
In 1968 SIMON DUPREE & THE BIG SOUND anonymously recorded and released a single, "We Are The Moles Part 1 / We Are The Moles Part 2", today better known as "Was it The BEATLES in disguise?". It is so clearly imitated band "The Beatles" that many fall for the bait when the rumor was started that the record actually belongs to the great Liverpool quartet. According to some reports, this action organized by none other than George Martin.
