  1. The Konrads featuring David Bowie – The Konrads Rehearsals 1963

David Bowie (Dave Jay) (vocals, tenor saxophone)
    Neville Wills (guitar)
    Alan Dodds (guitar)
    David Hatfield (drums)
    Rocky Shahan (bass)
    Roger Ferris (vocals)

The Konrads were David Bowie's first professional band. The group consisted of David Jones (David's real name) (vocals, tenor saxophone), Neville Wills (guitar), Alan Dodds (guitar), Dave Crook (drums), George Underwood (vocals). George Underwood left after a short time. Apparently the name Kon-Rads came about whilst they were appearing with Jess Conrad, who introduced them as "my Conrads". The hyphen was removed at David's insistence. By the end of 1962, David Hadfield had replaced Dave Crook on drums. Also joining the band were Rocky Shahan (real name Chaudhari) on bass guitar and on vocals were Roger Ferris, and two sisters Christine and Stella Patton (now Gall). David changed his surname to 'Dave Jay' because he was inspired by Peter Jay And The Jaywalkers, who according to David were only one of two British bands that 'knew anything about saxophones'. On Friday, August 30th, The Konrads entered Decca Studios, Broadhurst Gardens in West Hampstead for the first time and cut their first record entitled 'I Never Dreamed'. The song was written by David, Roger Ferris and Alan Dodds, the main vocals are by Roger Ferris, with David taking the harmonies. Several acetates were cut by Decca. Drummer David Hadfield said the song concerned an 'air crash'. Soon after this recording, David left the band, though the band stayed together playing the club circuit and even toured as the opening act with The Rolling Stones. David said he became dissatisfied with The Konrads because of their choice of song repertoire. He wanted to play more blues numbers instead of the pop standards they chose to cover.

  5. DAVID BOWIE - iSelect (2008) @320

12 titles selected and commented in a 8-page booklet by David Bowie himself. ISelect is a David Bowie compilation CD with a collection of personal favourites compiled by Bowie himself. The compilation is notable for two reasons. First, Bowie avoided the usual greatest hits route and instead compiled a selection of favourite album tracks. The album contains only three singles (Life on Mars, Loving the Alien, and Time Will Crawl), of which only Life on Mars dates from his classic 1970's period. Secondly, it is the only release to contain the track "Some Are" which has been unavailable since the mid-1990's deletion of the 1991 edition of Bowie's 1977 album Low on which it was included as a bonus track. (Record Runner)

Originally available as a free CD included in the June 29, 2008, edition of British newspaper Mail on Sunday and re-released by EMI due to popularity, iSelect is a compilation of 12 songs from David Bowie's catalog that were personally selected by Bowie. Strangely, besides the classic "Life on Mars?" (and the lesser-known single "Loving the Alien"), most of the cuts are not the expected big hits. Instead, he chose his favorite tracks of his career, obscure as they might be, including the melodramatic nine-minute trilogy "Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing" from Diamond Dogs, the post-punk screwball "Repetition" from Lodger, and the sultry and soulful sax ballad "Win" from Young Americans. Bowie's picks were rationalized in an article that accompanied the newspaper release of the CD, where he casually penned his inspirations for the songs and the recording processes behind them. Fortunately, EMI's updated jewel-case version includes Bowie's explanations included in the liner notes to provide some insight. For "Teenage Wildlife" he notes, "So it's late morning and I'm thinking, 'New song and a fresh approach. I know, I'm going to do a Ronnie Spector. Oh yes I am. Ersatz just for one day.' And I did and here it is. Bless. I'm still very enamoured with this song and would give you two 'Modern Love's for it anytime...." Fans will likely find this commentary interesting, just as they will probably appreciate the new revamped version of "Time Will Crawl" from Never Let Me Down with live drums and strings, and the unreleased "Some Are," an outtake from the Low sessions with Brian Eno. Newcomers who have already perused the greatest-hits collections may find this a worthy stepping stone before getting lost in his lengthy discography. (Allmusic)
