American
band Jefferson Airplane was formed in San Francisco in the very moment
when it began to develop and strengthen the movement of "flower
children". The Group and its music - psychedelic rock - became a kind of
icon for hippies.
In the summer of 1965, when America was keen British band, filling her scene, and folk music, singer Martin Balin decided to create a new project. To cooperate, he invited folk musician Paul Kantner, blues guitarist Jorma Kaukonen Finnish descent, and jazz singer and Scandinavian origin Tolley Signe Anderson. Were invited bass player and drummer, but their names do not need a special mention, as they soon left the band.
The band's debut took place August 13, 1965 at the Club Matrix Club in San Francisco. Initially, the band focused on the music and style of artists such as The Beatles, The Byrds, Lovin 'Spoonful and some others. This is understandable, because at least the first two were so popular in the US (The Byrds while doing their first steps). Soon, however, the band began to develop JA his own style, which is quite pronounced on their first record - Jefferson Airplane Takes Off. Intoxicated by drugs, musicians inclined to psychedelic rock, with which it was extremely convenient to express their vision of drugs (in the literature refers to the psychedelic rock that arose under the influence of LSD). JA musicians were not the best instrumentalists, but in a short time they were able to develop his own unique style, its special, well-recognizable sound.
In the autumn of 1965, the group has changed. Place the drummer Skip Spence won and became the bass player Jack Kesidi. At the same time signed a recording contract with RCA Victor. Debut album was published September 1, 1966. Despite the fact that she was able to take only 128 th place in the national charts, it was not so bad. Its main numbers began Let Me In, It's No Secret, Tobacco Road, and Let's Get Together.
Shortly after the release of this album, the band left the Skip Spence and Anderson. They called for the replacement drummer Spencer Dryden and charming singer with a powerful voice, Grace Slick, begins in the group The Great Society.
The second plate group - Surrealistic Pillow - was released in February 1967. Quite unexpectedly, she won 3rd place in the US charts. In many ways, this contributed to the song Somebody To Love and White Rabbit, which became big hits. The first of these was written stepbrother Grace Slick, Darby, the second - most Grace. It quickly became apparent that Grace - an indispensable person for the group. Psychedelic sound on this record was even more pronounced. It is believed that in the recording musicians helped Jerry Garcia, leader of another iconic American group - Grateful Dead. However, neither the documents of the company RCA Victor, no producer records do not confirm this.
In June 1967, JA has become one of the main stars at the festival in Monterey. Driven by two vocalists - Slick and Balin - group enchanted the audience. Released on November 30 of the same year third album marked a change in the direction of the so-called stylist acid rock (acid-rock). In addition, the sound becomes more difficult. Main number plate steel experimental Spare Chaynge, lyrical Watch Her Ride and dual composition Will not You Try / Saturday Afternoon. This record stood until the 17th of the charts.
A year later, in September 1968, JA has released another, fourth plate - Crowd Of Creation. It was not like the previous releases. A softer sound, more elements of folk-rock. Began plate typical folk-rock song Lather, composed by Grace Slick and narrated, according to the author, a drummer Spencer Dryden. Of particular interest is a beautiful, tragic tension ballad Triad, tells the story of a love triangle (in which, in particular, is sung: "Why do not we have three?"). This is a song composed by David Crosby, a member of The Byrds, The Byrds but it did not record, considering the weak composition. Another great number of records - If You Feel.
In August 1969, the band shone at the festival in Woodstock, where she played a program with great inspiration. Three months later, in November, the album saw the light of Volunteers, which is considered to be the most politically in the band's discography. Most of the songs are anti-war, including the title Volunteers. It was originally supposed to headline plate Volunteers Of America («American volunteers"). Of course, this was hard not to see an allusion to US foreign policy - the state, which led at that time incomprehensible war in Vietnam. Bosses of the company RCA Victor, of course, noticed the hint and opted to trim the name to one word - Volunteers. Recorded guests participated in the person of Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead), Nicky Hopkins, David Crosby (former member of The Byrds) and Stephen Stillza (former member of Buffalo Springfield).
In December 1969, the band took part in the infamous concert Altamont Free Concert, during which members of the biker gang "Hell's Angels" staged a mass brawl. Was murdered black teenager. The fight was arranged during a speech Rolling Stones. It hurt and Martin Balin.
In 1970, the band recorded a single on the first side of which the song sounded Mexico. It was sharply criticized US President Richard Nixon, who decided to take action against the endless supply of marijuana in the United States. Shortly thereafter, the group left Martin Balin, its founder, and after some time Slick and Kantner fired drummer Dryden, describing it as "shy idiot."
Regular two plates - Bark and Long John Silver - were released in 1971 and 1972 respectively. They are noticeably inferior to previous works, and tell them nothing special. Care Martin Balin strongly affected the band's music. Guitarist Kaukonen, although it continued to be a member of a group, are less interested in its affairs, devoting himself to the project. As a result, by 1973, the band was on the verge of collapse. Kaukonen and Kesidi left her, and Kantner and Slick, decided to continue the work under the guise of Jefferson Starship.
