Quote :
This is one of the first progressive / psychedelic bands in Sweden. Musicians gathered back in the beginning of the 60s, occasionally speaking on dance floors. Then they called themselves Mecki Mark Five. This lasted until the Summer Of Love in 1967, a wave which has reached Sweden. It is natural that under the influence of new attitudes in life and music artist has completely changed his musical orientation, substantially careening toward psychedelia. Increase in the number of participants, which has grown to septet. So, the new team included Mecki Bodemark - vocalist and keyboardist, Bjorn Fredholm and Thomas Mera Gartz on drums, saxophonist Hanz Nordstrom, bass guitarist Jan-Erik Olsson, trumpeter and guitarist Anders Sjostedt Clas Svanberga. In this composition, and the debut performance of the first in the history of Swedish jazz and pop festival in the open air. The event took place in Kungstradgarden (King's Garden) in central Stockholm. Time - July 1967.
The musical climate in Sweden mid - late 60s was heavily influenced beats and psychedelic scenes. The emergence of completely new musical trends coincided with obvious stagnation in the sphere of culture that was beneficial to the rapid growth of these new trends. The political instability of European society coexisted with experiments in the field of consciousness and psychotropic drugs. Such experiments are actively used in pop culture: artists and musicians in every possible way tried to broaden the scope of their consciousness. From all corners of the Nordic people greedy for all new and fancy, flocked to Stockholm, which is gradually becoming a center of experimental music and unformatted. In a short period of time in the city opened countless clubs, one of which is called "Filips", located in the immediate vicinity of the King's Garden. The club lasted only a couple of months during the summer of 1967, however, it has become a kind of center for the collection of psychedelic-leaning groups. Among the regulars were Hansson & Carlsson, Baby Grandmothers and the newly reformed Mecki Mark Men.
Closer to the fall of the same year Mecki Mark Men released their debut single, "Midnight Land" \ "Got Together" at the "Philips". In September in Stockholm came The Mothers of Invention. A visit to the capital of Sweden was part of their first European tour. Mecki Mark Men and Hansson & Carlsson signed for heating. To everybody's surprise, bassist Jan-Erik Olsson and Anders Sjostedt left the band. Already five of the band went into the studio to record their debut album. This happened in October 1967.
The self-titled album, made a splash his exit at the end of the year. In fact, it was the first Swedish album psychedelic underground, significantly ahead of its time with the non-traditional "their" sound, based on the artful manipulation of Meki with authority. Singer's voice resembled Jimi Hendrix, the Swedish performance which again warmed Mecki Mark Men. The musical atmosphere of the album is somewhat reminiscent of the first album the group Secondhand "Reality". For the first time in Sweden, this team has used the sitar, giving the plate oriental flavor. In general, the work is a mixture of different styles such as rhythm and blues, psychedelia and jazz. Despite the success, the album sold poorly, probably due to poor publicity and lack of interest of the media. Therefore, in 1968 an attempt was made to release an album in the United States, which was done in August on the label "Mercury". Sales have improved, however, just before Christmas '67 inexplicably left the band drummer Bjorn Fredholm. Four members went on tour with Baby Grandmothers. Both groups discovered Jimi Hendrix concerts in Sweden and Denmark at the beginning of January 1968, but this group disbanded in the spring. Hans Nordsrom even abandoned music, Thomas Mera Gartz went to Parson Sound (which later changed its name to International Harvester, and later transformed into Trad, Gras Och Stenar). Clas Svanberg has decided to continue his musical education, and Meki Bodemark was invited to Baby Grandmothers, which he accepted.
So, the group - Meki (keyboards and vocals), Pelle Ekman - drums, Linnarsson - bass and Kenny Hakansson - solo. The speed, the new structure was the old name Mecki Mark Men. The last link is the singer \ actress Anki Lindkvist after which the band went on tour in neighboring Finland. On his return to Sweden team signed a contract with the Stockholm theater and about half a year participated in the local version of the rock musical "Hair". Then, there were performances in socialist Czechoslovakia (together with the band The Nice, Modry Effekt and Cuby & The Blizzards), recording in the Czech Radio.
Somewhat later Meki managed to negotiate with the leadership of the American label "Limelight" on the recording of their second album, which was done in the period from January to February 1969. The album is called "Running In The Summernight". Recording took place in "Europa Film Studios" in Stockholm, and the issue was made on the American label "Limelight". Perhaps that is why some encyclopedias indicate the group as the US, which is not true. About a year later (spring 1970), the group took a tour of the United States. The list of speakers were presented by celebrities such as The Byrds, Sly and The Family Stone, Paul Butterfield and Jethro Tull. Music 2nd plate, however, has lost the charm of the first - somewhere evaporated experiments, the basic structure based on heavy guitar riffs and organ passages that might be nice, but pretty ordinary. Nearest signs - Moving Sidewalks, Iron Butterfly.
Closing the album "Marathon" was released in 1971 and was a less severe version of the second. In the same year the band broke up once and for all, leaving behind three albums, the first of which is considered to be a masterpiece of psychedelia. You could put on this point, if not one but ... three parties - Pelle Ekman, Bella Fehrlin and Kenny Hakansson + Rolf Scherrer created a new group, whose name - KEBNEKAISE.
