The Hollies - At Abbey Road 1963 - 1966 (1997)

"The Hollies at Abbey Road 1963-1966" is an excellent collection of early British Power-Pop. People who enjoy the first four Beatles albums are very likely to enjoy this collection as it is made up of similar material performed in a similar style. Like the Beatles, the 1963-1966 era Hollies were beginning to write their own songs while still do excellent cover versions of early Rock and Soul gems. Most of the covers tend to be louder songs that have more drive to them while most of the originals are love ballads. Above all, this set shows that the Hollies aren't the talent lacking Beatles imitators that the American press usually paints them as. The fine liner notes, that list dates of the recordings and other facts, actually lead me to believe that the Hollies were a band of like minded individuals who developed at roughly the same time as the Beatles under the creative guidance of the same record company (EMI) and recording studio (Abbey Road).
