The South African group "Clout"
was founded in 1977 in Johannesburg, and originally consisted of five
girls: Glenda Gayem (Glenda Hyam) - vocals, keyboards, Lee Tomlinson
(Lee Tomlinson) - vocals, bass guitar; Ingrid "Inci" Herbst (Ingrid
"Ingi" Herbst) - vocals, drums, Cindy Alter (Cindy Alter) - lead vocals,

"Pendulum" (1972-75 years), and Lee - lead singer of the group "The
Amazons" (1964-67 g z.). The other girls experience in show business to "Clout" had.
The debut single, - "Since You've Been Gone" - was released in 1977 and was a cover version of Russ Ballard (Russ Ballard), which he wrote in 1976 for his solo album "Winning". As the song was a hit in its original version and about the same time with "Clout" other covers have been released on this thing, the single was not a success.
During this period, "Clout" acquainted with his future producer Graham Beggs (Graeme Beggs). According to his lead vocalist Cindy Alter, a meeting was held with Graham thanks Glenda. "Graham was familiar with Glenda Glenda was our keyboard player, and Graham led a group in which she played before, - says Cindy - she told us.." This manager has his own record label, and he wants to see us. Can I bring him on Saturday night, when we rehearse? "Graham came on a few rehearsals, he liked what he saw. He saw our potential and said:" Listen, I have a good song, you could write " . This was the song "Substitute".
Initially, "Substitute" the song was recorded in 1975 by a group of "Righteous Brothers", but it was not popular. It is "Clout" made it a worldwide hit. Interestingly, while writing this thing just a girl singing, and all the instrumental parts were played by musicians from "Circus" group, which had been specially hired for this purpose. This fact has long been hiding and became known only after the collapse of "Clout", because the image of the group - a company of pretty young girls playing powerful rock songs, was one of the components of commercial success, the distinguishing feature that stokes the public interest. Another "chip" was the provocative logo "Clout", in which the letter "O" contains the image of women's panties.
The single "Substitute" was released in November 1977 and finished in June of 1978 2nd place in the UK charts, which is held for 3 weeks. In New Zealand, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, South Africa, the song "Substitute" was №1, in Holland - №2, France - №5, Austria - №10, Sweden - №13. In the US singles chart hit in September 1978 and held for a week 67th (according to some reports 61 th) place, stayed on the charts for a total of 10 weeks. The volume of sales of their debut single in the UK was 600 tys.kopy, France - 400 tys.kopy in Holland - 100 tys.kopy, Belgium - 60 tys.kopy. Great American singer Gloria Gaynor, Impressed global success "Substitute", has recorded a version of this song and released it as a single, which, however, did not become popular in the home or America or in other countries.
In early 1978, the group left Glenda Gayem. Her place was taken by keyboardist Ron "Bones" Brettell (Ron "Bones" Brettell) of "the Circus" group. Other members of the "Circus" kept working session musicians when recording songs, but did not appear on stage during performances of "Clout". In the same year, the band recorded their debut full-length disc "Substitute" (in some countries, was published under the title "Clout"), which was released on the Carrere label. The cover plate group was displayed in the original lineup, which included Glenda Gayem. album pleases high quality material: different melodic songs, strong emotional, but not hysterical vocals, as well as the successful arrangements with vibrant rhythm section and powerful guitar riffs. All this allows us to consider this work as one of the standards of pop-rock style.
During 1978 it was released the singles "Let It Grow" and "You've Got All Of Me" (№ 25 in Austria, №17 in the Netherlands), which was moderately popular in continental Europe, but have gone unnoticed in the UK and the US.
In 1979, the composition of the "Clout" has changed again: the group came another man - guitarist Robbie Sandy (Sandy Robbie), who, like Ron Brettell, was a member of the group "Circus", by this time had already disintegrated. The group released their second album "Six Of The Best" and singles "Save Me" (№14 in Austria, №6 in the Netherlands), "Ms. America" and "Under Fire" (№26 in the Netherlands). Two men came to the "Clout", finally "coming out of the shadows": their faces appear in the photographs placed on the cover plates. Amazing fact: singles and albums of no more occupy any respectable positions in the European charts (except for the Netherlands, Austria and Germany) and do not appear in the US charts and Great Britain
