Moby Grape - Moby Grape (1967)

Quote :
The band was formed by Skip Spence, who was apparently a guitarist in an early line-up of Quicksilver Messenger Service, before being recruited by Marty Balin as drummer for Jefferson Airplane. After one album with the Airplane, he left to form his own group. Back on guitar, he was joined by Jerry Miller (lead guitar), Peter Lewis (guitar), Bob Mosley (bass) and Don Stevenson (drums). All five members sang and wrote songs (Miller and Stevenson usually writing together). Their first album consists of some upbeat guitar-driven psychedelic rock, ranging from frentic triple-guitar assaults to mellow, more acoustic-based numbers, all with great group vocals. The songs are all short, concise and punchy, as is the album itself (clocking in at just under 30 minutes). All of Moby Grape's later albums were in the shadow of this stunning debut, which is often considered one of the best records to come out of the San Francisco scene
