Country Joe McDonald - Thinking of Woody Guthrie (1969)

McDonald signed a contract with Vanguard Records as a solo artist and went to Nashville with Sam Charters to record his first solo album in a small Bradley's Barn studio.  McDonald and his band were still together, but the relationship was intermittent, and they broke up shortly after the release of CJ Fish.  Recording sessions for the album Macdonald supported by well-known country musicians, such as Grady Martin.  Among the songs were Guthrie's favorites - "Tom Joad" and "This Land is Your Land".  Despite the fact that the studio musicians did not know the compositions that McDonald wanted to record, they mastered them incredibly fast.  The recording of ten tracks took only one day.

The release of the album in December 1969 brought McDonald's recognition to critics, and in 1975 McDonald attended the Hollywood Bowl with other contemporaries to take part in the celebration of Guthrie's career, in part due to his album.  As a sign of respect, MacDonald performed "Woman At Home", a song by Guthrie, which was not published at that time.

Thinking of Woody Guthrie was released in 1969 and became the debut solo album of Country Joe McDonald, better known for his work with the band Country Joe & the Fish.  The album was an attempt to record folk and country music in the style of Woody Guthrie, who died two years ago.  All tracks of the album were either written or performed by Guthrie.  McDonald heard Guthrie as a child when his parents listened to Dust Bowl Ballads (Woody Guthrie's first album).  Despite the fact that McDonald was subsequently released a lot of records, this album, he is proud especially.
