The next installment of the Grateful Dead’s Dave’s Picks live archival series will feature a legendary concert from 1973. Dave’s Picks Volume 32 contains an official recording of the band’s March 24, 1973 performance at The Spectrum in Philadelphia.
The Grateful Dead’s March 24, 1973 show was a marathon affair featuring 31 different songs. Highlights from the first set include Phil Lesh leading the group through “Box Of Rain” early in the first set, one of 15 versions of “U.S. Blues” predecessor “Wave That Flag,” a gorgeous “Here Comes Sunshine” and exploratory “Playing In The Band.”
The lineup of Lesh, guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, keyboardist Keith Godchaux, drummer Bill Kreutzmann and vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux charged through “The Promise Land” to kick off the second set and then deliver a “China Cat Sunflower”/”I Know You Rider” pairing during one of the best eras for the sequence. However, the must-hear portion of the show is the string of “He’s Gone” > “Truckin'” > “Jam” > “Dark Star” > “Sing Me Back Home” > “Sugar Magnolia” that brings the second set to a close. The 22-minute improvisation features the “Spanish Jam” theme and touches on “Dark Star” before the band launches into the shortest version of the song on record.
