Wishbone Ash’s 1971 sophomore album Pilgrimage has confounded fans and critics alike for years. In 1970 Wishbone Ash had burst onto the Rock scene after being discovered by Deep Purple’s Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, and their Twin Guitar assault had endeared them to legions of Hard Rock fans the world over. Their debut was a burning chunk of Hard Rock Guitar fury. Therefore when the came out with this followup, which was a complete retreat and retrenchment from the first album’s Hard Rock into a more soft Folky and Acoustic realm most fans were left scratching their heads. It’s almost as if Wishbone Ash were ashamed of or frightened by their success. The only two tracks on Pilgrimage that even resemble the music of their debut are the wondrous Vas Dis and the scorching Jail Bait. It’s a good and solid Wishbone Ash album, but their classic sound it’s not. That does not however mean Pilgrimage is a bad album, far from it. The Pilgrim is a wonderful folky epic. And Valediction is just lovely. Highly recommended. (AllRovi)
